Becoming a Private Tutor Part 2

Setting Fees

Money is always a contentious issue. Tutors need and indeed want to be paid. Yes, many do tutoring in addition to their normal day-to-day teaching job because they desire to help students to achieve success. Some do the additional hours tutoring as they need the extra money that tutoring brings in. Since tutoring is not an ‘easy’ option as it involves preparation, the time spent actually tutoring, possibly travelling or having the student attend at your own premises, reporting, recording, assessing and accounting it is not exactly a role to undertake lightly.

Dyscalculia: A Brief Introduction

Dyscalculia is demonstrated through the following features in relation to maths; difficulties understanding and following instructions, poor counting and calculating skills, poor knowledge of number facts, inability to apply number facts to problem solving or to master skills needed for operations, poor skills at operating with numbers or symbols and the inability to use calculations for the four rules.

Dyslexia: A Brief Introduction

Dyslexia is evident when accurate and fluent word reading and/or spelling develops very incompletely or with great difficulty, despite appropriate learning opportunities – that is, learning opportunities which are effective for the great majority of children.
                                                                                                                                     (British Psychological Society, 1999)

Many children with ‘dyslexia’ also experience difficulties with memory, sequencing and language. A significant umber may also experience phonological difficulties leading to problems with reading, writing and spelling.

It is important to identify children who are experiencing such problems as early as possible. This will be done in schools through assessment. Early identification means that schools can support children as soon as possible in their school career and support them within the classroom environment, where possible.

On the Monthly Downloads page is a gorgeous complete set of word banks on an autumn theme (available for free download until 30th November, 2010) They are also available from the resource store. The contents are:
