Reading: Key Words

MPT Reading Resource: 1st 100 Words

100 HFW words that every student should know how to read, write and spell

When we read there are certain words, key  or high frequency words, that are more common than others. They will occur in almost everything we read or write. Learning these words is an essential component to helping children learn to read.

The first set of words which children in Reception (ages 4-5) need to learn are contained in a downloadable list HFW_FS_4-5.

Children in Years 1 and 2 (ages 5-7) need to know the words contained in the list which is downloadable HFW_KS1_Yrs1&2_5-7.

It is important to remember that children will also need to know the following:

  • common colour words
  • their name and address
  • numbers to twenty
  • days of the week
  • months of the year
  • the name and address of the school they attend

To help your children learn these words you can use the word cards supplied in your welcome gift pack (available free to newsletter subscribers who joined before November 1st 2010). Additional resources, including games may be provided with newsletters as free resources from time to time and will always be available to purchase in the store.

Students who are registered with My Personal Tutor for reading support and tuition will be provided with a range of resources, games, learning packs and books to use at home to supplement and enhance their reading tuition.

We have just produced a lovely autumn themed display and resource set of the first 100 words, high and medium frequency words including flash cards and word mats.

(This post was originally posted September 2010).

A list of the medium frequency words for older children to learn will be posted shortly in our next article about reading.

The downloads are pdf documents.
