Private Tuition: Getting Started as a Private Tutor

Whether it’s because you want to earn some extra money on top of your day job or because you’d rather tutor than teach a class, you have to start somewhere.

It may be that you’ve already made the decision and are firm in your commitment. On the other hand perhaps you aren’t sure whether tutoring is for you. This is the place for you to start.

In a nutshell the key requirements are:

•Enthusiasm
•Subject knowledge
•A desire to work with students to improve their learning and understanding
•Subject specific resources as necessary (e.g. number lines, place value cards etc.)
•Record book for recording student details, fees received, expenses, assessment records
•Terms, fees etc.
•Business card or leaflet detailing your details and services
•Stationery (for you and your student)
•Somewhere to work (and store your equipment, books and resources)
Of course a computer with internet access, although not essential, will make your job an awful lot easier.

Next time we’ll look at setting fees.
