Ideas for Literacy Support

One way to support students across the whole range is to use word banks, journals etc. You may know them as spelling logs or word books. In the past I’ve used them with my students but I’ve also used something else. Word mats. Banks of common, high frequency or topic words that are there for students to use when they need spellings.Such banks are highly recommended for students with additional needs.

On the Monthly Downloads page is a gorgeous complete set of word banks on an autumn theme (available for free download until 30th November, 2010) They are also available from the resource store. The contents are:

The first 100 words

High Frequency Words (Foundation Stage/Reception)

High Frequency Words (Years 1 and 2)

Medium Frequency Words (Key Stage 2)

Autumn Topic Words

The words are all arranged alphabetically to enable children to find the words and to develop dictionary skills from the start.

There will be other versions to follow along different themes and in different colour ways to help students with Irlens Eye, colour blindness etc.

If you’ve got an idea for a theme for the word mats please let me know.
